Synopsis:

You will be punished…

Celestine North lives a perfect life. She’s a model daughter and sister, she’s well liked by her classmates and teachers, and she’s dating the impossibly charming Art Crevan.

But then Celestine encounters a situation where she makes an instinctive decision. She breaks a rule and now faces life-changing repercussions. She could be imprisoned. She could be branded. She could be found flawed.

In her breathtaking young adult debut, bestselling author Cecelia Ahern depicts a society where perfection is paramount and flaws lead to punishment. And where one young woman decides to take a stand that could cost her everything.

I received this book in an exchange for an honest review

This book is one of the most powerful political books I have ever read, I normally stay away from dystopian books because of how heavy the book can get in terms of the plot and scenes. I don't really like reading something like that. But for some reason I felt compelled to read this book having no idea what to expect, apart from what I was hearing of how powerful it is from other readers.

Celestine is a very mathmatical, logical person. For her every identified problem has a solution, and that is exactly what costs her life to be turned around and change the course of the book. I must admit when I first started the book I was very bored of it, I didn't understand what the hype was about especially since I was slowly getting out of my reading slump. You must have imagined my surprise when I read what will happen to her and the horror, I cannot believe the enormity of it. I literally brawled like a baby. SO badly. I kept telling myself 'see this is why I cannot read books like this, its too much for me'. I went back and forth trying to get in to the story but it was so hard, I couldn't get through the harsh realities of what she had to go through, I mean all she did was try to help a person? In reality that is a everyday occurrence where you see one human help another, what is so imperfect about that? Why did they have to punish her so severly and make an example out of her? Is she not human? One thing I learn everyday is compassion and kindness goes a long way, such a long way that it could turn a person's bad day in to a good day and that makes you feel good about yourself. We need more kindness in this world not hate, we have enough of that already just by turning the television on or hearing the news. I suppose this is why this got to me on a personal level, I just....I couldn't take it really. I wasn't sure whether I wanted to carry on with it. I know Ahern is a fanastic writer since I have read some of her other novels which never fail to make me fall in love with her writing. This book made me feel more than hollow inside, I felt empty.

Celestine is a very strong character. And I have to applaud her for her courage and bravery. She made a conscious decision to do the human thing and show compassion, she gave voice to the weak and help those in need. With any political situation, everyone has an agenda and no one is any different in this book, Celestine is a pawn for everyone to use to their own advantage. Sickening really. I can't say I was impressed with her boyfriend Art and sister Juniper, they didn't really support her in her time of need.

Carrick was the one light in all of this, I think I will like his character very much and I hope there is romance between him and celestine. I cannot wait for the next book.
