Synopsis:

Set on the ragged edge of a postapocalyptic frontier, Blackwing is a gritty fantasy debut about a man’s desperate battle to survive his own dark destiny…

Nothing in the Misery lasts…

Under a cracked and wailing sky, the Misery is a vast and blighted expanse, created when the Engine, the most powerful weapon in the world, was unleashed against the immortal Deep Kings. Across the wasteland, teeming with corrupted magic and malevolent wraiths, the Deep Kings and their armies are still watching—and still waiting.

Ryhalt Galharrow is no stranger to the Misery. The bounty hunter journeys to a remote outpost, armed for killing both men and monsters, and searching for a mysterious noblewoman. He finds himself in the middle of a shocking attack by the Deep Kings, one that should not be possible. Only a fearsome show of power from the very woman he is seeking saves him.

Once, long ago, he knew the woman well, and together they stumble onto a web of conspiracy that threatens to unmake everything they hold dear and end the fragile peace the Engine has provided. Galharrow is not ready for the truth about the blood he’s spilled and the gods he’s supposed to serve…

OMG I KNEW THIS COVER WAS SO AWESOMELY AWESOME BUT I NEVER DREAMED TO READ SOMETHING DARK AND LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH!!!1 AND THE COVER?????WITH ALL ITS PURPLE SHININESS CONTRASTED WITH BLACK?????? 😍😍😍😍😍😍😨😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

The plot is very unique in this book, I actually didn't realise I was reading a apocalyptic dystopian novel until a few chapters in? How did that happen to me? I will tell you, I was so intrigued with the way the book started that I wanted to know more about the 'captain'.

Okay, so I think I got the gist of the plot, although there are still many questions that are unanswered for me, let me give you an example to the genius mind of the author. Take the example of the Bride they were killing 'brides' in the book and because there is this notion of marriages being so pure and getting married to your loved one we automatically assume they are innocent right? Wrong, Ed has created them to these monstrous creatures who lure people in their command and basically want them to have sex. The more people they have under their control the more their bodies swell up. Okay when I first read this the fact kind of creeped me out a little, but honestly putting all that aside I have never read anything so dark and amazing at the same time? RIGHT?!!!!

Ryhalt Galhardos, who is the captain of Blackwings (often referred to as captain) recruits, this legion or army belongs to Crowfoot. So there are two main armies, there is the Nameless (who I still don't quite understand) and then there is Deep Kings who are fighting this war which has been momentarily paused for a few years. There is this creative invention created by one of the Nameless, Nall 's Engine (created by Nall, no brainer right?), which defends the people against these Deep Kings. The race is on to find out what secrets are both side hiding? Is everyone as innocent as they claim? Only one way to find out.......

It is very rarely that I enjoy so many characters in a book, but I am happy to say there is more than one important character in this book that I loved. Everyone plays a part. My favourite are; Ezabeth, Nenn and Tnota. I have no idea how you pronounce any of these names but I found me liking them more and more as I read deeper in to the book. Nenn and Ezabeth are very strong characters, both who would take no crap from anyone, defy against all odds and incredibly loyal especially Nenn.

I really don't know where to begin and end with this book, I loved this book so much. I only have eternal gratitude for Gollancz for sending me a copy 💖

P.S. Don't forget to check out the rest of the schedule
