Valentine's Day at the Star and Six pence

Title: Valentine's Day at the Star and Six Pence
Author: Holly Hepburn
Published: 8th February 2016
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: Hell yes!
Synopsis:

Fall in love at the Star and Sixpence this Valentine's Day....

Love is in the air as sisters Nessie and Sam prepare for Valentine's Day at their newly renovated pub, The Star and Sixpence. They have a star chef winging her way from London to cook a very special Valentine's Day dinner, for all the couples in the village.

But as sparks fly in the kitchen, will love bloom in The Star and Sixpence? A romantic short story, perfect for fans of Cathy Bramley and Scarlett Bailey.

OMG!!!! Guys!!! This book was sooooooooooo cute and I loved every minute of it. I never thought I would enjoy the book so much!

From what I gather, Nessie and Sam are sisters and they take over Star and the Sixthpence when their father dies, although initially they find it difficult they pull through. I can't really say much about the characters or the plot since it was a short story. However, on Valentines Day they want to arrange a special evening at the Star and Sixpence with the help of a celebrity chef.

BUT what I can tell you is that Owen, Sam, Nessie and Joss made me want to read more and I want TO DEVOUR THIS BOOK SO PLEASE DO NOT STAND IN MY WAY!!!!!!!! I love these kind of books!!!

Getting to Yes

Title: Getting to Yes
Author: Allie Pleiter
Published: 12th July 2016
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: YES!!
Synopsis:

Suzann knows Adam is the perfect man for her--the man she's waited for, prayed for, fallen hard for from the first. Valentine's Day is coming. It's the perfect time for him to pop the question. She's more than ready, he's trying to get ready, so why would God throw obstacle after obstacle into the mix? Will Suzann and Adam get to "yes"? This tenderly romantic and funny novelette is a short, sweet read and the prequel to Sweet City Hearts 2:"My So-Called Love Life" (Previously released as a Harlequin Love Inspired online read.)

An avid knitter, BBC Television geek and French macaron enthusiast, Allie Pleiter writes both fiction and non-fiction working on as many as four novels at a time. The enthusiastic but slightly untidy bestselling author of over two dozen books, Allie spends her days writing, playing with her adorable Havanese dog Bella, buying too much yarn, and finding new ways to avoid housework. Allie hails from Connecticut, moved to the midwest to attend Northwestern University, and currently lives outside Chicago, Illinois. The “dare from a friend” to begin writing has produced a fourteen-year career with over one million books sold. In addition to writing, Allie regularly speaks on faith, the creative process, and women’s issues.

OMG!!! These short stories are going to finish me! This was so hilarious, if I thought I was crazy and over thinks a lot then clearly I have not met Suzann! My only regret is that she is not real! Why do I fall in love with characters? :'( Oh yeah because they are just so perfect and silly like ME!!!!

Suzann and Adam are perfect for each other, they have been dating for a year now and Suzann knows he is the one. So what is the problem? The problem begins when Suzann starts to hope and fantasise about Adam proposing her on their one year anniversary. Unknown to her, Adam is facing problems of his own. We know that his parents had one of the worst marriages/divorce ever but we are not told how severe it was and how much that impacted on Adam. We do know that is makes him afraid, especially when his boss also is having problems with his own wife and had a confrontation scene in the office. Yikes, now that would be a weird thing to see in front of everyone.

I really loved Suzann and Adam, they were both caring, considerate and romantic towards one another but Adam fails to push through and take a leap of faith. For all the romantic lovers out there (that would be me too), he does eventually say it in the end *phew* but I now I want to know MORE!!!!!!

Let's talk: do you love short stories too? Let me know your recs below!

Top 10 books I read in 2016

Okay so I know I am a tad bit late on this post (a bit? Try 2 months late) which has been sitting in my draft folder for about a month now. BUT I finally decided that I should throw everything else out at the window and just get on with it! Nobody is getting any younger right? Unless you choose to believe otherwise which you totally should. Right I am rambling again...

2016 has been one of the best reading year for me, although I did not read much but I still read a great deal of books that absolutely blew my mind. Here is my pick on them!

P.ssssss if you click on the images you will be re-directed to my reviews

(Check out Elise website here and cover art by Merilliza Chan)

1. Air Awaken Series

I will love this series till my dying breath. It's a shame it is over, with the events unfolding so quickly, my heart speeding up in its pace, I don't know if I ever could get over this series. I am in love with Aldrik and Vhalla so much! Have you seen the other cover's art by the artist? She is amazing, so please check her and the author's books too!

2. Flawed

Guys, I have no idea if I have even recovered from this book yet, even though I am eagerly awaiting the sequel. What happens to Celestine in the book, I remember every detail of it every time I close my eyes. I CRIED when they were tormenting her, the last time I cried was when I read Me Before You. This is the most intense book I have read in 2016 so this is definitely in the top 5.

3. The Square Root of Summer

I really loved this book even though I had no idea what Gottie was talking about half of the time, she was just so clever. It made me feel like that if I read science or math books then I would become too (it is never that easy is it?).

4. The Neverland Wars

I have maybe read retellings before but this was my first Peter Pan retelling and I loved every minute of it. I am hoping there is romance blossoming between Peter and Gwen but I guess I will have to wait and see what happens.

5. Act Like It

As soon as I read the blurb, I fell in love with this book. I can't wait for the second book to come out, Lucy Parker is my new favourite author! *sighs*

6. Beyond the Stars

Another contemporary I fell in love with, as soon as I saw the cover I just had to buy it! I really loved Jess and Jack in this book, I only wish Jack was real!

7. The Reflections of Queen Snow White

This one actually surprised me, as the title suggests it is a reflection on Snow White's life from child to adult. I wanted more scenes between Prince Charming and Snow White though and it is a shame he dies ๐Ÿ˜”

8. Edenhart Rivalry

AHHHH!!! I LOVED AURORA AND TRISTAN IN THIS BOOK!!! I am so psyched that the author will be releasing a sequel soon! Eek! Can you believe it?  I still wish Percy didn't die though and I hate where the author just ends the book, that is when it is getting so intense you are at the edge of your seat!!!!

9. Emerge

This book was very interesting it was a book about the Mer folks but it also about Sirens who serenade people with their songs. I absolutely loved this twist.

10. Alchemist of Loom

How can I not include this my top 10? I loved this book so much, although I was wondering how Elise would take her approach in this new book. But as ever, she does it again! I have never read a book about dragons before and I am glad this was my first read because I am NOW OBSESSED WITH THEM!

Let's talk: So there you have it folks, my top 10 books I read in 2016. I want to know what books were your favourite in 2016 so leave your links in the comments below!

Worth Fighting For

Title: Worth Fighting For
Author: Charity West
Published: 17th October 2016
My Rating: 3/5
Recommend: Yes!
Synopsis:

High School senior Lily Rhodes has been in love with her brother’s best friend nearly all her life. When nineteen year old Jake joins the Marines and is shipped overseas, she worries she’ll never see him again, and wishes she’d been braver before he left. Lily vows that if Jake comes home, she’ll tell him how she feels. But when Jake is injured by an IED and is discharged from the Marines, he comes home changed, bitter and broken. Despite the fact he's loved Lily for the past three years, he no longer feels worthy of someone like her. Not one to back down from a challenge, Lily knows the best things in life are worth fighting for.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would my heart also was broken for Jake but I am glad him and I came through together (I sound like I was with him in the book, oh wouldn't that be a dream come true).

Jake having being injured from war, is sent home to recover but nothing is ever the same when you come back from war is it? Never knowing whether you will be alive the next minute or not, you learn to value each moment and cherish every memory. Although it should be like that anyways, sadly sometimes we get too caught up in life we tend to live in the future and not the present.

Jake thinks he is worthless, he can never be with any girl now. He is depressed and suffers from PTSD, he thinks who would be with someone like him? Since he has Shrapnel in his shoulder and leg, he can't go upstairs or walk properly who would want someone as useless as him? (don't think like that BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT) But if there is one thing you learn from this book is that everyone has hope no matter what situation you are in, there is hope even for Jake and she comes in the form of Lily :).

I loved Lily, she is headstrong, considerate and has been in love with Jake ever since she was 3 years old. Unknown to her, so has Jake, he just never told her since he thought Riley wouldn't approve of dating his baby sister. But seriously everyone can see them gooeing eyes at each other, how can they not see how much they love each other? The good news is they eventually do, yay for them!

My fav character of all was Riley, I really really loved him! Not only was he a good brother, a good best friend but also a good son. He literally was perfect *swoons* I only wish there was more of him, I really loved his relationship with Jake and Lily, so easy going and funny! I FEEL THE NEED TO SAY THIS BUT I THINK RILEY SHOULD HAVE HIS OWN PERSONAL STORY DON'T YOU THINK? IT'S TIME HIS STORY SHINES TOO!!!!!!

Because I studied War for two years, I know very well the after effects of what happens to someone after coming back from war, nothing is ever the same. And it is really hard for things to go back to the way they used to, but with the help of Lily, Jake slowly manages to get out of it. A loveable, cute story.

Until next time booklovers! :)

Movie Review: The Conjuring 2

Movie Details:
Title: The Conjuring 2
Release Date: 10th June 2016
Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Frances O' Connor, Madison Wolfe, Simon McBurney, Franka Potente
Rating: 5/5
Synopsis:

In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren come out of a self-imposed sabbatical to travel to Enfield, a borough in north London. There, they meet Peggy Hodgson, an overwhelmed single mother of four who tells the couple that something evil is in her home. Ed and Lorraine believe her story when the youngest daughter starts to show signs of demonic possession. As the Warrens try to help the besieged girl, they become the next targets of the malicious spirit.

O-M-G! I literally have no words, I am speechless how to describe the experience of watching this. I freaking love this, even now thinking of some of those scenes gives me the heebie-jeebies.The story was woven with so much suspense and twists, it was a epic ghost tale that send chills down my spine. This was both scary as hell to watch and loved every minute of it, it was so worth the wait to watch after three years of the first release.

This had a very old, vintage, 1990's theme to it as how it should be, remember this is set in 1977 so the scenes should like it too although I have no idea how they manage to do that maybe it was all a camera trick? . In Conjuring 2, the movie is mainly black, grey and old style decor. I didn't think the colour was very bright but I guess I would expect that from the film. However, the whole bleakness was good as it set the tone for the eerie scary scenes.

I can 100% confirm that you will scared as hell, because there is more going on than meets the eye, yes Janet is possessed but something else, more sinister is lurking there. Will Ed and Lorraine figure it out before it is too late?

The Music and sound for any horror movie can never be good is it? They always play these freaky background music that scares me even if there is nothing there. I know they do it as an added effect to build up more suspense. But I am that kind of person when alone in the house, whenever the house creaks or any movement is made, in my head the background music is already  playing and I start to conjure up the most absurd scenarios ever! *runs and hides* ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ๐Ÿ˜จ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ™ˆ.

I really loved the acting in this movie, I think the whole cast did a stupendous job. They did such a good job, I was constantly at the edge of my seat, at one point I even doubted if Ed and Lorraine would even help Janet and Peggy especially when something demonic is after  her and no one trusts you or is willing to help. I really have no idea how James Wan did this but he managed to pull of the impossible and make a superb sequel to the first film.

Let's talk: have you seen this film yet? What did you think of it? Let me know in the comments below!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Black Witch

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: The Black Witch
Author: Laurie Forest
Series: The Black Witch Chronicles #1
Release Date: 2nd May 2017
Synopsis:

A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining.

So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa’s heir—but while she is the absolute image of her famous grandmother, Elloren is utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

When she is granted the opportunity to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an apothecary, Elloren is eager to join her brothers at the prestigious Verpax University and finally embrace a destiny of her own, free from the shadow of her grandmother’s legacy. But she soon realizes that the University, which admits all manner of peoples—including the fire-wielding, winged Icarals, the sworn enemies of her people—is an even more treacherous place for the granddaughter of the Black Witch.

AHHHHH!!! I just wish this would release already! I am really loving reading books about Witches, it is becoming my fav genre to read! BUT I really wish this was releasing in the UK, never mind because I will buy it either way! Also, look at that cover! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

The Lament of Sky

Title: The Lament of Sky
Author: B.B Wynter
Published: 26th December 2014
My Rating: 2/5
Recommend: No
Synopsis:

There once existed a collective of Gods called the Duwaiu. Mortal long ago - now bound together for a thousand years - the Duwaiu swore allegiance to the Vildarii: three faceless entities that governed the spirit worlds, Otherworlds and the Hell plains; ensuring that the great wheel of life continued to turn.

But the second Vildarii, Guardian of the Hell plains, desired that there be ultimate suffering upon the world and drove all the Duwaiu Gods into madness. As consequence for their insanity, the Rhai-Angof - a ferocious female race - were hunted unto extermination and the essence of the Vildarii was crafted into three human men.

Lilyth, the last remnant of the Rhai-Angof, fights to survive against the ruling, tyrannical Vildarii regime. Her journey leads to encounters with William, the only remaining Duwaiu God; Sky, an ethereal being of otherwordly magic; and a philandering sky-pirate named Vergo.

As they progress through their adventure together, Lilyth slowly begins to piece back memories that were stolen by the magic of the Vildarii. Eventually, putting together the puzzle of the regime’s evil scheme, it leads to an unforgettable climax, where races and worlds collide

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review

Hm..I really don't know how to feel about this book. I feel like I when I read the synopsis I felt so excited about reading a fantasy book, I am a big lover of this genre. However I felt like my hopes just plummeted down, kind of like someone removing the floor from underneath your feet.

There were so many times in the book when I felt like I could go on no more and wanted to just DNF it but I was adamant to give the book a fair chance, I had hoped it would change my mind.

(let's bring the tissues out, although this book was not for me that is not to discourage anyone else reading it)

Shall we get to the impending list then?

1. The writing style

2. Language

I am not sure if this goes hand to hand or not but my reasons would be similar so instead of repeating myself I wanted to answer this once. I wouldn't say the way it is written is terrible but I because I have no idea what era this book is set in, I feel like the style and language used is like from the old passages, like the 15th century. Now I personally find it hard to comprehend the meaning behind the text sometimes so I found it really hard to read this book. When I was reading I would go over the chapters again to make sure I was reading it properly, this no doubt takes more time which makes it harder to get in to the book and enjoy it.

3. I found Lilyth quite annoying and rude

There is must be a limit to how someone can annoy you right? I found Lilyth constantly annoying and bad mouthed, she literally spoke her mind with no filter which is not always a bad thing BUT sometimes she was just saying silly things which made no sense. Honestly isn't she a drama queen? Everything must be done her way!

That is not to say I didn't enjoy certain aspects of the book I really loved her humour sometimes as much as she had a mouth on her she was just really funny about her perspective on things!

“How strange, but why would I know what a cabbage man is?” she spluttered rudely.
“Not cabbage Lilyth, but Caraid – the beings of light. All Rhai-Angof know these things.”
“Well do you know how cheesy that just sounded? ‘Beings of light’…really, I feel embarrassed being in your presence. Wait…you’re not a fairy? Now I feel even more uncomfortable. And I don’t believe you either! Sprout your wings or I wont be convinced of such drivel.”
“I am not a cabbage or a fairy, I am Caraid. We guide and assist hopeless humans like you, though we have been known to travel down a rather darkened path, once in a while,” he smiled rather cheekily.”

The characters were okay, I actually only read the book because of Sky. He is hiding a lot of secrets that come to light and I can't say I am surprised you are actually given little clues in each chapter leading up to it. He is actually kind of cute, although he deceives Lilyth I do love the way he treats her #couplegoals

The romance had a interesting twist, before losing her memory she was in love with William for so many years (100 was it?) as soon as she starts to regain some back she changes directions. I suppose I can't blame her because her memory was gone for some time.
