ARC Review: The Little Teashop of Lost and Found

Title: The Little Teashop of Lost and Found
Author: Trisha Ashely
Published: 9th March 2017
My Rating: 5/5
Recommend: Hell yes!
Synopsis:

Alice Rose is a foundling, discovered on the Yorkshire moors above Haworth as a baby. Adopted but then later rejected again by a horrid step-mother, Alice struggles to find a place where she belongs. Only baking – the scent of cinnamon and citrus and the feel of butter and flour between her fingers – brings a comforting sense of home.

So it seems natural that when she finally decides to return to Haworth, Alice turns to baking again, taking over a run-down little teashop and working to set up an afternoon tea emporium.

Luckily she soon makes friends – including a Grecian god-like neighbour – who help her both set up home and try to solve the mystery of who she is. There are one or two last twists in the dark fairytale of Alice’s life to come . . . but can she find her happily ever after?

Wonderfully wry, heart-warming and life-affirming, Trisha Ashley's hilarious novel is perfect for fans of romantic comedies by Milly Johnson and Jill Mansell. And it contains recipes!

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, a huge thank you to Transworld!!!

OMGOMGOMGOMG!!! I really need to find another way to express my overload of emotions with 'omg' but because I currently don't have one I am going to keep using it until I find another one. But WOAHHHHH!!!!

**INTENSE EMOTION OVERLOAD**

Right, lets get to the review shall we?

This is such a cute adorable story, I was gripped from the edge of my seat. With this being a Contemporary, I was surprised to be literally so hooked in to the book (I mean come on who doesn't love a good romance novel right?), I felt like I was in touch with my readerness so much that I had become one with the book seriously!!! I have no regrets reading this in one sitting and not getting much sleep either, that is dedication baby.

Alice, oh my sweet Alice. She had to go through so much even as a baby, for most of her life all she feels is rejection and she longs to know where she belongs. From the very first chapter in the book, Trisha gets right in to the story of Alice being a fondling which breaks Alice's poor heart when she finds out (Nessa tells her when they are both having a disagreement and old secrets are coming to the surface). Originally from Haworth, Alice moves around a lot after her adopted father dies (from Cornwall to Scotland to her hometown again) but after dealing with one blow after the other, she has a mental breakdown after her current fiancΓ© dies (my heart broke a little again). But Edie soon convinces her to start a fresh and she has every right to live in her hometown, Alice soon enough is consumed by the idea of going back to her roots and where her best friend lives. However things don't go always as planned, the Bramwell Cafe she buys is a complete fraud with everything being broken, dirty and awful condition. Not at how it was advertised online when she bought it on impulse from Mrs Muswell (she also plays a interesting part later on in the story). Alice is on a new mission, she is determined to open her little teashop just as she always wanted to, however she faces numerous obstacles along the way.

Alice is a very strong and sensitive character, she loves with all her heart. Even with the constant hurdles coming her way she gets back up again every time, I have to admire her resilience. What I loved most about her was that she was constantly a surprise all the time, every page I turned I never truly knew what was going to happen next. She was a character who I fell in love with instantly. As well as being reader (smart choice girl) she was also a very quirky author in my opinion with strange but hilarious story ideas. She wrote one book about an author and I quote:

Who'd had such a vicious book review that she'd tracked down the perpetrator and unleash on her a series of revenging goblins, boggarts, wicked fairies and other dark creatures, who all inflicted punishment on her in different and inventive ways.

Omg, see what I mean? I just freaking love her! <3 But all her hardwork pays off when she gets a contract from a huge publisher, way to go Alice! *applauding*

They say some surprises come in any shape and size in this case it is a Greek like God named Nile Giddings who owns the shop next door, the antique store Small and Perfect. His sarcasm was actually what won me over, he is really intellectual or at least the way he talks seems like he his. However he is I still fell in love with his character, his constant banter with Alice more like disagreements were a such a joy to read (well really he was telling her his own opinion of things not that she took any of his advice unless it was a good one! She is such a badass woman). I really loved seeing their relationship evolve over time spent with one another, from friends to lovers. Aside from his rudeness sometimes, he really did help her a lot with finding furniture for the store and flat, supporting her when she wants to find out who her birth mother is. This leads me to introduce the Giddings family; Sheila (mother), Bel (sister), Teddy (brother) and Geeta (Teddy's wife). Such a lovely family, I loved Bel most of all, like Nile she also helps Alice a lot and the two instantly become good friends like sisters.

I really loved this story so much, after writing this review I am tempted to go read it again! Make sure you and go pre-order this book if you haven't!

**please note any quotes used in this review are taken from my copy of the arc

Movie Review: Kung Fu Panda 3

Movie Details:
Title: Kung Fu Panda 3
Release Date: 29th January 2016
Cast: Jack Black, Bryan Cranston, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, J.K. Simmons, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, David Cross, James Hong, Kate Hudson, Randall Duk Kim, Jackie Chan
Rating: 4/5
Synopsis:

Living large and loving life, Po (Jack Black) realizes that he has a lot to learn if he's going to fulfill the next challenge from his beloved instructor (Dustin Hoffman). After reuniting with his long-lost father (Bryan Cranston), Po must transition from student to teacher and train a group of fun-loving, clumsy pandas to become martial-arts fighters. Together, the kung-fu brethren unite to take on the evil Kai (J.K. Simmons), a supernatural warrior who becomes stronger with each battle.

You know those posts that your meant to write and you postpone it for a while because life happens and then you remember and then you begin to do it but then it just stays in your draft folder? Yeah that is what happened with this post and the vicious cycle just repeats again πŸ˜•

I was looking forward to this movie ever since I watched the sequel and realised that there was going to be a third movie, I was whooping with joy!!!!! πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

I really liked this film a lot, in this one, Po has more of a leader role then first two and I think he has done well in his journey so far. He is also reunited with his family, I was really sad to hear that in order to protect Po, his mother sacrifices herself! (I was secretly hoping that somehow she survived).

I love every animated movie that Dreamworks have ever released, you can really see they have taken the time and effort to make it a masterpiece with each project they release and work on.

Kung Fu Panda holds a very special place in my heart, since the very beginning of the first film, this film breaks all barriers on what a Dragon Warrior should look like- you don't expect it to be Po even some of the other characters are quite surprised when Oogway tells them he is the dragon warrior. I love this notion, anyone and everyone can be special and they are; you don't need to fit into any ideals to be special.

Even with this movie, the theme of surprising audience with their colourful and vibrant animation is not lacking. They don't fail to disappoint. I loved everything about this movie, the tone, the theme, animation, songs, reunion.

In the end, all the characters in Kung Fu Panda don't disappoint, they each take a surprising turn and become teachers to the other Panda's. Now let's dance like a happy family, yay!!! πŸ’“πŸ’“πŸ’“

Who would you like on your Book Panel?

Hello everyone ^_^, I hope everyone is good and well. Gosh don't you think it has been forever since I have just sat down and done a discussion post at all? Today is a very interested topic I want to discuss today, imagine just imagine if you could select anyone in your panel to be, AND I DO MEAN ANYONE! You could have maybe one of your favourite Harry Potter character's (or himself ) on there, or maybe even John Green himself? SO today I will be giving you my intake what my dream book panel would be, so let's get started ......

Author's:

1. Elise Kova

One of my highlights of 2016, was getting to know more about Elise, she is by far an amazing author and human being. Her Air Awaken series doesn't get enough recognition as it deserves. You can thank this lovely author for getting me to love Fantasy again, I owe everything to her. She is positive, loveable, supportive, caring, kind basically everything a perfect human should be. I would love to see her on the panel and see what amazing creative ideas she would bring to the panel.

2. Sophie Kinsella

Ah Sophie, where does the praise begin for this author? I happen to have stumbled upon one of her books a couple of years ago, since then I have never turned back. She is like the Chick Lit queen, love her to bits. She would be amazing on the panel, I would love to hear her ideas on how she shapes a story, how does she make her characters so funny and with depth too, why is she so loveable, basically everything!!!

3. Sarah Morgan

Queen of the romance literature, I have come across her books before but I never understood why I never read any of her books because she is freakingly awesome. I would love her input on how she makes the male protagonist so swoon worthy 😍😻

4.  Trisha Ashley

Another queen of romance, she really has a way with words. Not only does she come up with the best hero's in her books but they are so GOD DAMN CUTE!!! My only regret is they are not real (I secretly am wishing they truly do exist in another world). Her latest book captured by heart with Nile Grecian descriptive terms, how is it possible Nile and Alice are so cute together and Alice can't see that??? *sighs*. I really want to know how she decides what she is going to write next.

5. A.G. Howard

She just won my heart with her latest release, which you can check out my latest review here but she is so amazing. I really love how she has woven a gothic tale in to such a beautiful story and my heart was just so devastated to learn that it is only a standalone. I want to know how she wrote such a beautiful book; what was the writing process like? How did she decide what characters would look like? Their names? Personality etc.

6. Sherry Thomas & Sara Raasch

I really loved BOTH of their series (I am yet to catch up on their latest releases, it is somewhere in the never ending pile of T-B-R 😩😨😰😱😱πŸ˜ͺ). Both of these managed to crumble me in to tears with their sweet words and epic romance. HOW DID THEY DO IT??? I am fascinated with how all this began.

7. Michelle Zink

This author is very dear to my heart, a few years ago when I lost sight of reading (and growing up). I saw an advert once of her books to 'read this series' and what did I do? I Googled it and the blurb just captivated me. In all honesty I rushed to the library the next day and just ordered these books I could not wait for the words to consume me. She made me realise how much I loved reading and missed it. She really has some interesting ideas, I wonder if any of her characters are inspired by anyone???

8. Wendy Higgins

OMG!!!! Kaiden Rowe is so AWESOME there is no where to go when he enters the room. How did this author come up with this character and turn him in to someone with just one look can make all the girls melt in to a puddle?? *sighs*

9. Katherine Owen

Lincoln and Tally won my heart instantly. What I like most about this series is how much hardship they go through to get one another, this author really makes them work for it (it's like going to hell and back, somehow managing to survive).

10. Rebecca Donovan

Her Breathing series is quite emotional me for to read. Over the years, I can't seem to read the heavily emotional stuff. I just start sobbing on the very first page, but then once in a while you come across a series that grips you. I still have not managed to review this series yet, it took me a long while to read this series but I very much loved Evan and Em together. Where did this idea spark to write such a story? I wonder....

Character's:

This has to be my favourite category, now only if this truly existed! πŸ˜•πŸ˜•πŸ˜Ÿ

1. Emma

Oh my poor sweet Em, please bring Evan with you, thanks! *runs away*

2.  Vhalla & Aldrik

These two are my love and NOBODY CAN REPLACE THEM!!!

3. Poppy

She is so funny, she would probably end up loosing her mobile phone and then searching for it everywhere πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ’–πŸ’–πŸ’–

4. Thorn & Rune

Be sure to bring your mask along with you eh? You could scare the whole audience πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‚πŸ˜„πŸ˜†

5. Arcus & Ruby

Again, my beating heart cannot contain this cuteness.

6. Alice & Nile

PLEASE bring some of your best cupcakes I am 100% sure everyone would just devour it as soon as they see it! (I know I will)

7. Lia

Oh Lia, you are so perfect. I'm glad you finally won the battle but so sorry for you loss. But it's okay because we can be sisters! Okay?

8. BASICALLY ALL OF MY BOOK BOYFRIENDS, I AM INDECISIVE OKAY? I CAN'T CHOOSE ONE! I WANT ALL OF THEM THERE!!!

Okay, so I just realised and had a really GOOD look at my list, there is a lot of people for a panel wouldn't it? OMG! I just forgot the people of Narnia! πŸ˜“πŸ˜±πŸ˜±πŸ˜± How did I do do that? I was forever stuck on this film series ( I am yet to read the books) for a very long time, it is engrained in my childhood.

Waiting on Wednesday: Once And For All

"Waiting on" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Title: Once And For All
Author: Sarah Dessen
Series: N/A
Release Date: 6th June 2017
Synopsis:

As bubbly as champagne and delectable as wedding cake, Once and for All, Sarah Dessen's thirteenth novel, is set in the world of wedding planning, where crises are routine.

Louna, daughter of famed wedding planner Natalie Barrett, has seen every sort of wedding: on the beach, at historic mansions, in fancy hotels and clubs. Perhaps that's why she's cynical about happily-ever-after endings, especially since her own first love ended tragically. When Louna meets charming, happy-go-lucky serial dater Ambrose, she holds him at arm's length. But Ambrose isn't about to be discouraged, now that he's met the one girl he really wants.

Sarah Dessen’s many, many fans will adore her latest, a richly satisfying, enormously entertaining story that has everything—humor, romance, and an ending both happy and imperfect, just like life itself.

I really love contemporary novels so I cannot wait for this to be released!

What are you waiting for this week? Let me know in the comments below!

A Phantom of the Opera Retelling

Title: Roseblood
Author: A.G Howard
Published: 10th January 2017
My Rating: 5/5
Recommend: Hell YES!
Synopsis:

In this modern day spin on Leroux’s gothic tale of unrequited love turned to madness, seventeen-year-old Rune Germain has a mysterious affliction linked to her operatic talent, and a horrifying mistake she’s trying to hide. Hoping creative direction will help her, Rune’s mother sends her to a French arts conservatory for her senior year, located in an opera house rumored to have ties to The Phantom of the Opera.

At RoseBlood, Rune secretly befriends the masked Thorn—an elusive violinist who not only guides her musical transformation through dreams that seem more real than reality itself, but somehow knows who she is behind her own masks. As the two discover an otherworldly connection and a soul-deep romance blossoms, Thorn’s dark agenda comes to light and he’s forced to make a deadly choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or face the wrath of the phantom who has haunted the opera house for a century, and is the only father he’s ever known

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review, thank you to Abrams for sending me the copy. I love you guys for this <3!

This was insanely freakingly AWESOME!!!

GUYS I am having too much of a #feelsplosion moment, my emotions are all over the place. HOW DO I EXPLAIN HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS PHANTOM RETELLING. I can't seem to remember if I already knew about the phantom although I have a vague recollection I do (maybe I hit my head somewhere a couple of years ago and I have amnesia without me even knowing? I have some weird memories that came back to me from time to time!).

Rune who has this problem of singing and this isn't your ordinary singing, it is one where she is compelled to sing, a song literally wants to be sung by her vocal chords! . Because of her recent incident which no one knows about what really happened except for her, her mother is intent on sending to her a boarding school in Paris! PARIS!???? If only I had a mother like that who would send me to a boarding school in the city of love! What can be better than that? Also, the new boarding school was once a Opera House----->turned boarding school called Roseblood .

Thorn who won my heart straight away with his intense thoughts and hiding away behind the mask, just like the phantom. He is not the phantom but...wait for it...THE SON OF THE PHANTOM!! Can you believe that? Although at first I was surprised it was dual POV I actually had no idea, but as soon as I started reading this book the more it hooked me, the more I was starving for Thorn's words I wanted to know what was happening inside his head, what was he thinking? I was gripped whenever his voice poured out from the book.

Rune and Thorn's relationship began when they were 7 years old, coming to each other's dream, comforting one another and sharing a similar fate of losing a loved one. I absolutely adored this pairing and this has so far been one of my favourite couple of 2017! I was so ready for them to become a couple, sadly when that does happen the book is finished (YOU CANNOT DO THIS TO ME, I NEED MORE #TUNE #ETUNE I NEED MORE OF THEM! I WANTED MORE BANTER, MORE FUNNY SCENES!! HOW DO I GO ON NOW AFTER FINDING OUT THIS IS A STANDALONE NOVEL??)

I feel like this Pikachu, unable to move forward. My life has lost all its meaning.

On the other hand, thanks to the lovely author she kindly directed me to her playlist which you can find here and her Pinterest board here.

oh yeah how did I forget about the phantom? Well he is kind of an enigma, very mysterious with several shades of grey. Although I did love learning about his history too (the little we did learn about him and Christina). I wanted to know more though, were told he is very cunning, devious, manipulative, yet he never harms animals, he is very gentle and kind to them. In my eyes, I was attracted to his persona, all he wanted was love. I hate to admit I cried a little when I heard about his early life (how could his own mother hate him? I am becoming very emotional these days, crying over silly little things! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME??)

I loved, loved, loved this author's writing. I cannot wait to read more of her books! If you haven't read this book then what are you waiting for!! Go and do it now! Excuse me while go in the corner and cry my heart out!!

ARC Review: Frostblood

Title: Frostblood
Author: Elly Blake
Published: 12th January 2017
My Rating: 4/5
Recommend: Yes
Synopsis:

The first in a page-turning young adult fantasy series perfect for fans of Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen and Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass series.

In a land governed by the cruel Frostblood ruling class, seventeen-year-old Ruby is a Fireblood who has spent most of her life hiding her ability to manipulate heat and light - until the day the soldiers come to raid her village and kill her mother. Ruby vows revenge on the tyrannous Frost King responsible for the massacre of her people.

But Ruby's powers are unpredictable...and so are the feelings she has for Arcus, the scarred, mysterious Frostblood warrior who shares her goal to kill the Frost King, albeit for his own reasons. When Ruby is captured by the Frost King's men, she's taken right into the heart of the enemy. Now she only has one chance to destroy the maniacal ruler who took everything from her - and in doing so, she must unleash the powers she's spent her whole life withholding.

Frostblood is set in world where flame and ice are mortal enemies - but together create a power that could change everything.

Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review,

OMG!!! First of all thank you to Hodder & Stoughton for letting me read this book. I have been hearing a LOT about this book for the last couple of months so the EXCITEMENT was real!

OMGOMGOMG!!! *runs around screaming* where do I even start with this book???

SO I can't hold out any longer, I need to state how much I loved ARCUS like freaking so much, he puts the word 'love' in to a different perspective. Now he was a very surprising character, I knew I was going to love Ruby as soon as I read the synopsis. But Arcus? Damn Elly I did not expect him to be so brave, loyal, sensitive, compassion, such a know it all, moody, rude oh I could go on but he fits so well in to the role of a tortured badass character. I didn't expect him to be afraid of fire when were told why my heart broke in to a million pieces, poor little thing. I didn't realise that would be one of the reasons he would hide about himself (I honestly thought he had other reasons).  But his character does show evolvement, not drastically and thank god for that but small steps.

Ruby is a class of her own, she is so frightened, temperamental and ferocious at the same time it reminded me of when we are faced with our own problems where we have no choice but to face our demons head on in the battlefield (can you tell the plot is getting to me? Yeah I think the Minax might have consumed me a little). It was the same situation for Ruby, because she feels guilty of her mothers death as a result of her gift and always being told to suppress it, Ruby struggles with controlling her power. But Arcus and Brother Thistle are hiding secrets they haven't been fully honest with Ruby. How will she find out? Can Ruby really trust these Frostblood's?

The storyline actually reminded a few other books I have read where the plot is similar, Snow Like Ashes and The Last Year also share similar outlines, the whole Fire against Ice. But I also think, each of the stories are different in their own unique way.

Ruby wants to murder Rasmus, because of him there is so much evil spread throughout the land. There aren't many of her kind if any left at all. However, one fateful day she gets captured by the solider's and her mum is killed right before her very eyes. Ruby vows to take vengeance on Rasmus but eventually gets locked up. Help comes in the most unusual way, two Frostblood who exchange an agreement with Ruby, she needs to help them overthrow the King.

Although there isn't much romance in the book, I am happy that there is some! I really love the chemistry between Arcus and Ruby, I could hear it crackling on my iPhone. I also loved the banter between these two, if you love banter like me between the two protagonist then this is the story for you.

I think the pacing was okay, but I didn't really understand why it was split in to two parts? Did it need that? I mean if a certain time has passed then maybe but the chapter just continues straight where it left off so I was confused about that....

The battling scenes, brutally killing one another, the vivid description that was one thing I could not handle. Well I suppose I got through it, even when I read Flawed by Cecila Ahern it was one of the most hardest books I have ever read in 2016. This was really hard to take in, I am just lucky that Blake didn't elaborate too much on it, not even enough to create visuals for me but then again when I was reading about the darkness I felt like I could feel the power swirling inside of my room!

Movie Review: Passengers

Movie Details:

Title: Passenger
Release Date: 21st December 2016
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, Andy GarΔ‡ia
Rating: 2.5/5
Synopsis:

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt star in an exciting action-thriller about two passengers who are on a 120-year journey to another planet when their hibernation pods wake them 90 years too early. Jim and Aurora are forced to unravel the mystery behind the malfunction as the ship teeters on the brink of collapse, with the lives of thousands of passengers in jeopardy.

Their acting skills are impeccable, both Lawrence and Pratt have played their roles with perfection. However the plot fails to bring spice in to the movie, even with all the movie effects.

If you have seen my other movie review posts, you will know how much I love Chris Pratt in Jurassic World (you can find that here) and I just love Jennifer Lawrence anyways but after I watched this movie I honestly don't know how to feel about this movie. On the other hand my friend claimed to have loved it but I had a different view since I had some problems with it to begin with.

As per the synopsis, it is about passengers who board on the ship, named Avalon travelling to a new planet to start life a fresh, only thing is it would take them a 120 years to get there. Jim is awoken in his hibernation pod, when he first wakes up he has no idea that he is the only passenger on that ship who is awake so he tries to find out exactly why he is awake, only problem is he has access to only certain part of the ship so he can't exactly figure what is wrong with it. He then meets Arthur who is an android but quickly becomes a friend for Jim since he is the only other person on the ship. We don't actually get to see Jennifer's character for at least 1/4 of the film, yes I also kept wondering what is this film even about? Where is Jennifer and when will she show up? I was eager to get in to the movie and see their sizzling chemistry like it is shown in the trailer. I won't go too much in to the story, let's just say when Aurora does enter the picture more problems are not yet shown :( so no suspense. But it does happen later in the film when the one of the crew member wakes up..

I did actually enjoy Jim's character and Aurora too, I think she was more fascinating, I love that she was an author and wanted to be just like her daddy (she had a good motto too something along the lines of you needed to lead an interesting life to write one). I enjoyed learning about her through Jim's eyes as well as watch her grow. And yes their chemistry onscreen is on fire which is really putting it mildly.

I really have no idea how to articulate why I didn't like the movie, I figured it was easier to list them;

  1. In the whole film there are ONLY 4 main characters, Gus's entry is in the last 3/4 of the movie and not for very long either as his character dies.
  2. The plot didn't really have any appeal to it, yes travelling to another planet is great but what else is new?
  3. The only action and suspense in the whole movie is when the reactor gets too heated up and Jim has to go inside to cool it down otherwise the whole spaceship blows up

Now what I didn't have a problem with was the romance, they were both epic together! Eek. The only other thing that made this film bearable was the visual effects, I loved everything about it; the structure of Avalon, how you can venture outer space and so on.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder

This post is different, some of you may know a Quiet Kind of Thunder was released yesterday and to honour it I am going to try and imagine I am mute just like Steffi who suffers from selective mutism in the book. Normally for these kind of things I get really sappy because I can't handle the emotion of someone being unfairly treated because of their struggle, I just think why do they have to suffer like this? I really can't stand someone suffering like this! πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ˜πŸ’”πŸ’”πŸ’”πŸ’”

Q: Imagine what it would be like to not talk for a whole day.

A:

TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST, I have no idea how to respond to this or begin with that matter. Just writing this post is bringing tears to my eyes, I can barely see what I am writing through the blurriness of my vision and the tears.

First of all if I couldn't speak then I how I would use my manners? I advocate being etiquette  in all situations possible, how I would thank the person who opened the door for me as they were leaving? How I would be able to say please and thank you? I don't know sign language very well and even if I did not everyone knows so that would be out of the question.

How I would convey my ideas and thoughts to someone I am speaking to? Like in meetings? When I am in a conversation with someone, what if they wanted my advice how I would tell them that I understand their pain and problem, how can I advise them what I think they should do?

This also makes me question how I would make my needs known, I mean if I want something I just say it I suppose another way would be to show them but still they would need to have some idea of what I am talking about 😨😰.

Also, what if I wanted to talk to someone about my problems how I would do that? I know I could text the person but it is not the same feeling as opening up to someone close to you and sharing your thoughts and concerns. How would I joke with my friends and family? I can't imagine not being able to tell my friends and family that I love them very much without words.

Okay, what if I could see something wrong happening or an accident about to happen, how I would let the other person know before its too late? In very serious situations, this can make a big difference. e.g. giving testimony to a crime you have witnessed.

The only thing I can say is that if I was like Steffi or not being able to talk at all, I really don't know how I would cope. Words are very powerful and vital in everyone's life, having this taken away from me I would be completely and utterly devastated. This is how I communicate with everyone, but it makes me think twice next time I become angry, next time I use harsh words, say something I don't mean to.

This really makes me reflect, I want to use my voice for good and be better. I want to stand up against all the injustice in this world, spread love, make people feel good about themselves, be proud of their achievements, bring someone up and inspire them.

I have to applaud people who have these kind of condition and still live their life everyday to the fullest, in my eyes they are the true superheroes of this world. I hope this had made you think like it has made me, let's make an effort to use our voice for good and to help others and spread love.

As a bonus: this is an extract where Steffi describes five awful situations to be mute:

To be the girl who doesn’t talk, the girl who dithers in the corner
then shrugs a reply, I have Tem. And if there’s only one person in
the world I can talk to I’ll choose her every time.

The top five worst times to be mute

5) When you need the toilet

I am six years old and Tem is off school with suspected mumps (it
will turn out to be the flu). I navigate my silent day alone, without
my trusty interpreter, who pays as much attention to my needs as
she does her own. Everything is fine until I realize I need to pee.
I cannot say so. I can’t even lift my hand to gesture at the door.
I sit, rigid, staring at my worksheet. I wet myself. ‘Ewwwwww!’
the class screams in delight.

4) When you’re bleeding

I’m eight years old. We’re on a school trip at a family farm. We’ve
been divided into smaller groups – I’m a Giggly Goat, Tem is a Happy
Hen. I catch my hand on a barbed-wire fence and rip an impressive
hole from the pad of my thumb all the way across my palm. I try
to figure out how to tell the staff member looking after us – Julie –
without making too much of a fuss, and end up cradling my hand
to my chest for the next twenty minutes until Julie cheerfully asks
me what I’m hiding. I show her my hand – now a bloody, fleshy
mess – and she screams, backs away and faints.

3) When you need a new pencil

Eleven years old. SATs. We are ten minutes into Maths Paper 1
and the end of my pencil snaps clean off and goes skittering across
the floor. I know I am supposed to put my hand up and ask for
a spare; I know my teacher, Miss Kapsalis, will give me another
if I just ask. But it is not only my mouth that has frozen shut –
my limbs have gone rigid, my wrists scratching the splintered
ridge of my exam desk, the pencil in my clenched fist. I can’t even
move. I sit, panicking, for twenty minutes until Miss Kapsalis,
who is walking up and down the aisles of our desks to check for
cheating, finally notices. She lets out a noise that is groan, gasp
and horror all in one and drops to my side.

‘Steffi!’ she whispers, even though she’s not supposed to talk
to us during the exam. ‘You need to answer the questions.’

I uncurl my fingers and the broken pencil drops on to the
table. I’m given a new pencil with fifteen minutes to go. Needless
to say, I don’t exactly come top of the class.

2) When you look a bit suspicious

Twelve years old. Tem and I are spending a Saturday afternoon
together mooching around town. We’re in one of those bit-ofeverything
shops that sells clothes, twee gifts and cushions. Tem
is trying on a vintage prom dress and I am standing in the corner,
gazing at a shelf full of candles. The woman who owns the shop
is suddenly at my side, asking me in a threateningly gentle voice
what I think I am doing. I stare at her, confused and panicked in
equal measure. What could have been a polite ‘I’m just browsing,
thanks’ exchange turns into her getting increasingly irate and me
getting more and more frozen. No amount of ardent head-shaking
is enough for me to convince her I’m not stealing anything. She
is threatening to call the police when Tem comes parading out of
the changing room wearing a black-and-white polka dot dress,
announcing, ‘Just tell me how beautiful I am!’ before she sees us
both, clocks the situation in less than a second and hurries across
the shop floor to smooth things over.

1) When your best friend needs you

Thirteen years old. I am in a stadium, watching Tem run the
800m final of the County Championships. She wins the race and
is crackling with electricity and endorphins, leaping all over the
track, hugging me, letting go, bouncing, cartwheeling. It’s the
first county race she’s ever won. She’s just collected her medal
and is standing in the crowd, beaming down at it. And that’s
when a woman, the mother of one of Tem’s competitors, says to
someone – to this day I don’t know who exactly she was talking
to – ‘They shouldn’t let those ones compete; everyone knows
their bodies make them faster. It’s not fair on our girls.’

For one clueless moment I don’t even understand what she
means, but something about the sudden slackness in Tem’s
face makes it clear. There’s no hidden meaning, no nice liberal
understanding or context. The woman is being just plain racist
about my beloved Tem, right in front of her. And this is it: the
most shameful moment of my life. Because I don’t say a word. I
just stand there, even as I see the light leave Tem’s eyes, even as
she looks at me for just a second, even though she spends most
of her days looking after me. No one else says anything either,
but I know it is my silence that is the worst. My silence that is
unforgiveable.

Later, when I try to apologize – awkward and tongue-tied –
she waves me away, tells me she understands that sometimes my
words just don’t come, that she knows I would have spoken if I
could have.

So here’s the thing: this was the worst time to be mute, but in
a way it also saved us both. Because she didn’t have to find out
whether I would have been brave enough to stand up for her.
And neither did I.

P.S. A Quiet Kind of Thunder is released so make sure you go read this epic tale ( I am not sure I could I would literally be brawling from the first page).

Let's talk: Imagine if you were in Steffi's situation, how would you deal with it? How would you cope? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Peace out x
